LTh has given solid service to the people of Hafnarfjörður and others in Iceland since 1950 thanks to the dedication, experience and skills of its staff.
In the beginning ...
The origin of LTh goes back to when a newly-qualified lawyer, Guðjón Steingrímsson, put a sign in the window of his home in Hafnarfjörður offering legal services. This was in 1950, when there was no other lawyer operating in the town. To begin with, Guðjón ran his business in his own name, offering legal services of all types to the local community and also running an estate agency and acting as the agent for an insurance company.
Shortly after opening his business, Guðjón started working for the Hafnarfjörður Savings Bank as its legal advisor and handling the legal procedures for the recovery of arrears claims for the bank. He worked for the bank until his death in 1988.
The move to Thorsplan
Valgarður Sigurðsson, Supreme Court Attorney, took over the business after Guðjón’s death an in 1990 Guðjón’s son-in-law, Jón Auðunn Jónsson, Supreme Court Attorney, joined him. In 1993, when it moved to its newly-built premises in the commercial centre of Hafnarfjörður at Fjarðargata 11, it was decided to adopt a new name. The location, Thorsplan, originally a site (built by Thor Jensen innsk. DH) where salt cod was spread out to dry in an
earlier period of the town’s history, is reflected in the name Lögmenn Thorsplani (‘Lawyers at Thorsplan’), or LTh. We hope this will help to keep the memory of this aspect of the community’s history alive amidst the bustle of the modern town. Stefán BJ. Gunnlaugsson, Supreme Court Attorney, joined the firm in 2006, and since Valgarður Sigurðsson’s retirement in 2008 he and Jón Auðunn Jónsson have run it together.
Core activities
Debt collection, for financial undertakings, other companies, residents’ associations and individuals, has always been one of LTh’s core activities. In providing these services, LTh has relied on having competent and experienced staff. Sigrún Friðþjófsdóttir has been with LTh since 1985 and Hjördís Sigurðardóttir since 1993. Staff continuity and experience are invaluable assets in work of this sort where each task can be complex and detailed.
Our third lawyer, Dóris Ósk Guðjónsdóttir, District Court Attorney, joined us on a permanent basis at the beginning of 2013, having worked at LTh in summer jobs before that; she qualified as an attorney in autumn 2014.
